“We must act with urgency to stabilise the households of our vulnerable children. No child in the UK should be going to bed hungry. Whatever your feeling, opinion, or judgement, food poverty is never the child's fault. Let's protect our young. Let's wrap arms around each other and stand together to say that this is unacceptable, that we are united in protecting our children. Together we can end this problem.”
WE LIVE IN THE 6th RICHEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD
NO CHILD SHOULD GO HUNGRY IN THIS COUNTRY
THE STORY SO FAR
June 2020: Government pledged to support children on Free School Meals over the summer holidays with food vouchers.
September 2020: Marcus Rashford formed the Child Food Poverty Task Force, a coalition of charities and food businesses calling on Government to implement 3 recommendations from the National Food Strategy.
October 2020: Marcus Rashford launched a parliamentary petition to #EndChildFoodPoverty, signed by over 1.1 million people.
November 2020: Following a major public campaign, Government announced a funding package to help alleviate child food poverty. The support package is significant progress against the 3 National Food Strategy recommendations, but there is still a long way to go:
Extend the Holiday Activity and Food Programme to all areas in England, to all children who get Free School Meals
Increase the value of Healthy Start vouchers to £4.25
❌NO PROGRESS MADE
Expand Free School Meals to all under-16s where a parent or guardian is in receipt of Universal Credit or equivalent benefit
